The Giant Among Giants

Jupiter is the largest planet in our Solar System, boasting a diameter of about 86,881 miles (139,822 kilometers). It is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium and has a turbulent atmosphere dominated by massive storms, including the Great Red Spot — a storm that has raged for centuries.

Beneath its colorful cloud bands lies a vast ocean of liquid metallic hydrogen, generating the strongest magnetic field of any planet in the Solar System. Jupiter has over 90 known moons, with the four largest—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—known as the Galilean moons.

Jupiter’s immense gravity helps protect the inner planets by pulling in or deflecting comets and asteroids that might otherwise threaten Earth. It truly acts as the Solar System’s mighty guardian.
