The American black bear is a medium sized bear. It is the North American's smallest and widely distributed bear species. It prefers to live in forested areas however, is known to venture to human communities where food is abundant. These bears are excellent swimmers, swimming for pleasure and to find food. Additionally, these bears like climbing trees, or scratching their backs on them. This species lives an average of 18 years in the wild but are known to survive up to 23.

The polar bear is native to arctic areas. The polar bear is white- or yellowish-furred with black skin and a thick layer of fat. It is more slender than the brown bear, with a narrower skull, longer neck and lower shoulder hump. Its teeth are sharper and more adapted to cutting meat. The paws are large and allow the bear to walk on ice and paddle in the water

Grizzly bears are a subspecies of the brown bear, primarily inhabiting western Canada and the northwestern United States. They are often found in diverse environments, including forests, alpine meadows, and prairies. Grizzly bears near the coast tend to be larger while inland grizzlies tend to be smaller. Grizzly bears are omnivorous and have a diverse diet that changes with the seasons. They consume a variety of foods, including nuts, fruits, leaves, roots, fungi, insects, and fish, particularly salmon during spawning season

The sun bears are stockily built, with large paws, strongly curved claws, small, rounded ears and a short snout. The fur is generally short and jet black, but can vary from grey to red. Sun bears are solitary, arboreal animals known for their climbing abilities, unique feeding habits, and social interactions primarily during mating.

The spectacled bear is a mid-sized species of bear. Overall, its fur is blackish in colour, though bears may vary from jet black to dark brown and to even a reddish hue. The species typically has distinctive beige or ginger-coloured markings across its face and upper chest. spectacled bears may be active both during the day and night, but specimens in the Peruvian desert are reported to bed down under vegetative cover during the day. Their continued survival alongside humans has depended mostly on their ability to climb even the tallest trees of the Andes. They usually retreat from the presence of humans, often by climbing trees. Once up a tree, they may often build a platform, perhaps to aid in concealment, as well as to rest and store food on
