Organic chemistry is the scientific study focused on the structure, properties, composition, reactions, and synthesis of carbon-containing compounds. While most of these compounds consist of carbon and hydrogen, they can also include elements like nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and halogens. The field originally centered on substances derived from living organisms, but it now covers a vast array of compounds, including artificial molecules like plastics. Carbon’s unique ability to form four strong covalent bonds allows for an immense diversity of molecules, making organic chemistry central to pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, materials science, and more. Organic compounds include simple hydrocarbons as well as complex molecules found in living systems, highlighting the essential role that organic chemistry plays in life and industry.
